  • Unique open-air amphitheatre to be added to the State Register of Heritage Places

Heritage Minister David Templeman today announced the Quarry Amphitheatre in City Beach, a performance venue set in a former limestone quarry, would be added to the State Register of Heritage Places.

The site has significant value as the only former limestone quarry that has been adapted for re-use as an amphitheatre in Western Australia.

Located on Reabold Hill, in a bushland setting, the Quarry Amphitheatre has panoramic and unobstructed views of Bold Park and Perth city.

Diana Waldron, founder of the Perth City Ballet and her husband, architect Ken Waldron, were responsible for the inception of the amphitheatre, as well as fundraising and construction.

Since opening in November 1986, the venue has been used for concerts, ballet and other cultural events.

The amphitheatre demonstrates the importance of the quarrying industry in the first half of the late 19th century - stone taken from the quarry was used in the construction of some of Perth's earliest buildings, including the foundations of the Perth Town Hall.

Comments attributed to Heritage Minister David Templeman:

"The City Beach Quarry Amphitheatre is a well-known and treasured entertainment venue.

"The outdoor bushland setting makes it a unique and picturesque venue, which has hosted countless events, weddings and concerts. The Perth City Ballet has performed at the amphitheatre for over 30 years.

"I am thrilled to add the Quarry Amphitheatre to the State Register to recognise the importance of this unique place to the Western Australian community."
