Western Australians are urged to nominate their heritage heroes for the Heritage Council's prestigious Western Australian Heritage Awards.

The State Government awards recognise the outstanding contribution of owners, volunteers, professionals and organisations who work to promote and conserve WA's cultural heritage.

The awards, now in their 26th year, are an opportunity to showcase the excellent work in revitalising State Registered heritage places, setting standards in interpretation, heritage tourism, conservation and adaptive reuse.

More information on the 2018 WA Heritage Awards can be found at https://stateheritage.wa.gov.au/awards and by contacting the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage by emailing awards@stateheritage.wa.gov.au or telephoning 6552 4104.

Comments attributed to Heritage Minister David Templeman:

"The WA Heritage Awards are a wonderful opportunity to recognise the passion and commitment of the many volunteers, professionals and organisations whose work has helped build WA's heritage scene into the vibrant, innovative and highly professional sector it is today.

"Earlier this year, 16 individuals, organisations and outstanding heritage projects were honoured at the 2017 Western Australian Heritage Awards.

"Winning heritage tourism projects such as Busselton Jetty and the Ngurin Bush Tucker Trail show how heritage can be used as a tourism drawcard and play an important role in revitalising local economies and stimulating visitation.

"The transformation of Fremantle's former Dalgety Wool Stores into modern apartments illustrates how these types of large scale heritage projects can revitalise tired and rundown urban areas.

"The high standard of individuals and projects honoured at the 2017 WA Heritage Awards demonstrates why a heritage award is a highly sought-after and valued accolade.

"In recent years, five WA Heritage Award-winning projects have gone on to be recognised at an international level, receiving honourable mentions at the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards.

"I encourage all Western Australians to get behind their communities and nominate a worthy candidate today."
