  • Conservation order issued to halt demolition of 1934 heritage-listed timber jetty
  • Shire asked to consider alternative to immediate demolition

Heritage Minister Albert Jacob has halted the demolition of the Esperance Tanker Jetty to give the Shire of Esperance more time to consider alternatives for the community asset.

Mr Jacob has issued a 42-day conservation order on the jetty so the shire can finalise alternatives to immediate demolition.

This includes retaining a part of the jetty, preparing a final design for a new or restored structure and securing funding to undertake restoration or replacement work.

"This jetty is one of only three long timber jetties remaining in Western Australia and is highly regarded by the local and broader community," the Minister said.

"I am concerned that by allowing the demolition to proceed when the shire council has no detailed plans for a replacement structure and no funding to pay for it, the community could be left with nothing.

"This conservation order stops any demolition work and will also give the shire council time to consider a partial retention of the structure as another alternative to demolition - which is an option I have previously asked the shire to consider.

"It also allows for an appropriate business case to be developed in relation to funding future works."

The Heritage Council will undertake community consultation on whether an ongoing conservation order should be made beyond the 42-day stop-work period.
