Goldfields Earthquake Restoration Fund

Applications for this grant have closed.

On 20 April 2010, a 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Kalgoorlie-Boulder area, damaging a number of historic buildings.

To assist with restoration of earthquake-damaged heritage buildings, the State Government established the $5 million Goldfields Earthquake Restoration Fund to assist owners with the cost of repairs and conservation works. The fund was administered by the Department of the State Heritage Office on behalf of the Heritage Council of Western Australia.

Owners of heritage properties were asked to register their interest in the fund by the 30 September 2010.

The Goldfields Earthquake Restoration Fund was split into four streams of funding. These were:

   •  Emergency Relief Grants to the maximum value of $10,000 to assist owners with the cost of minor immediate repairs to make the building safe or to repair damage caused by the earthquake.

   •  Earthquake Restoration Grants to return a heritage building to its condition prior to the earthquake where costs are not met by an insurer. The owner will be required to make a substantial contribution.

   •  Preferred Work Grants, where a heritage architect appointed by the Heritage Council recommends work to improve the heritage outcome over that achieved by just repairing the building.

   •  Conservation Improvement Grants of up to $250,000 to undertake any additional conservation works.  These will also require a financial contribution from the owner.
