Have your say - guidelines and publications

The Heritage Act 2018 (the Act) will be supported by a number of guidelines, policies and other material. Some of these are required by the new legislation, while others are intended to guide the Heritage Council and others in applying various provisions of the Act.

As part of the consultation process, input is initially invited into two of the key documents that support the Act:

Guidelines for Local Heritage Surveys

Under the Act existing local government heritage inventories will become known as a ‘local heritage survey’ or LHS. The Act directs the Heritage Council to publish guidelines that cover key areas for the preparation and review of these surveys, and requires that local governments give due regard to the guidelines.

Draft Guidelines have been developed in consultation with local government, building on existing practice notes. A number of areas have been highlighted for further review in an associated Discussion Paper, although comment is welcome on any element of the guidelines.

Submissions on the Guidelines for Local Heritage Surveys may be made via email to until 3 May 2019.

When emailing feedback on the guidelines, please identify in the subject line which one you are making reference to.  To help us make sure your views are counted accurately, please use a separate email if commenting on more than one document.  Submissions should also clearly identify the clause or paragraph referenced, and your recommendation for alternative wording where appropriate.

To support the review process and allow local government input to the development of the guidelines, a workshop and webinar will be held on Thursday 21 March.  Hosted by WALGA, the event will run from 9.30am-11.30am. and is open to any local government officer.  To book into the workshop, either in person or via the webinar, please contact Kirstie Davis by email.

Guidelines for State Government

The Act directs the Heritage Council to provide guidance to State government agencies in relation to the preparation of a heritage inventory, and for integration of heritage management into the Strategic Asset Management Framework. The department will liaise with state government agencies to develop the draft Guidelines for State Government.
